There have been many earthquakes in the Machu Picchu region, and it is a tribute to the Incas' engineering know-how that so much of the work remains standing. Llamas and alpacas are not indigenous to the area, and were brought in fairly recently. There were few survivors after the first winter, but now a small herd is well established. They do a good job of keeping the flatter
grassy areas mowed.
