I think an artist's self portrait is a delightful art-form, and these three are among my favorites. The center image is Kathy Carvellas. See her work here.
I'd love to hear more about what you see that is disturbing. For me, disturbing was when my photography professor assigned a each class member a nude self-portrait. That definitely gave me the creeps. He said something about needing to "confront ourselves" before we could be good photographers.
In these cases, I think it's the view I get of the artist - it feels very personal and kind of like spying. I couldn't give that much of myself away in my art.
It's not a bad thing, though.
I'm very glad my high school photography teacher didn't give us that sort of assignment - he was a free spirit, but not that free!
Yes, it is very personal! I feel exposed with every piece of artwork I put out there for people to see.... My professor probably was not a free spirit, but probably a dirty old man.LOL. He couldn't have gotten away with it in high school.

Hmmm. Interesting and disturbing and thought-provoking all at once. I guess that fits my definition of good art.
